Engagement on Social Media in 2020

Engagement on Social Media in 2020

You’ve probably heard that engagement has decreased in the past year.  However, engagement hasn’t necessarily decreased as much as the way engagement is measured has changed.

So how do you go about increasing & measuring engagement on social media in 2020?

Likes Are Out. Shares & Saves Are In!

Early last year, Instagram announced that they would be testing removing likes from posts. When they started rolling it out late last year there were many reports of decreased engagement. However, this is because a lot of people (businesses, influencers, brands, etc) have always measured their success by the likes that they have received, which was never been a good or accurate measurement of engagement anyways.

How should businesses and influencers measure engagement with these changes? By how many shares and saves their posts have.

Shares and saves will show you how people are actually responding to your content. It is so easy to throw out a like on a post. But, if it is really connecting with your audience, they will share it and/or save it!

Personalization & Authenticity

Engagement on social media in 2020 is very individualized and user-focused.

This is why there has been an increase in messenger bots (chat bots). Now, not all messenger bots are created equally and some can be annoying and spammy…but a good bot will make your audience feel noticed and intrigued.

Another way to provide personalization to your audience is by actually connecting with them in a non-spammy, non-pitching way. This can be through DM’s (voice messages are really great to connect with new people!), by responding to the comments that they leave on your posts, and by commenting on the posts that they are putting out as well.

On the Table…

Social media is constantly changing. Instead of getting overwhelmed and panicking, just remember that all processes can be tweaked and adjusted. As long as you are providing valuable content to your audience and looking for ways to connect with your audience in a personalized, authentic way, then you will never have to worry about engagement.
