The One Social Media Behavior That Guarantees Failure

When it comes to social media marketing, we always talk about what we should be doing and what we should be posting. But what about what we shouldn’t be doing? Did you know that there is one social media behavior that guarantees failure?

Of course there are many things that we as business owners should avoid when creating our social media marketing plans, but this one behavior umbrellas all of the others.

So what is behavior that you should be avoiding?

Neglecting to build a relationship with your audience

Have you ever logged into Facebook and had a friend request from someone that you either don’t know or don’t know well? You approve the request because you have some mutual friends or Facebook groups in common.

Then, within 5 minutes of approving the friend request, you get a message from them….pitching their newest products or services.

If you’re like me, the first thing you do is delete them from your friends. Because “ain’t nobody got time for that”! Right?

No one wants to be pitched to in this way. It is spammy and downright frustrating.

And it usually backfires.

But, this isn’t the only way that you can neglect to build a relationship with your audience. Remember I said that this behavior is an umbrella of other bad behaviors?

Not listening to your audiences

Other ways that we fail to build relationships with our audience is by not listening to their concerns and critiques.

A good business will take constructive criticism as it comes and use these concerns and criticisms to better their products, services, and business practices. But when we fail to do this, we lose out on building that relationship with our audiences. The part of the relationship where they feel like they can trust us, because we listen to them!

This also applies to the type of content that we put out. If you aren’t listening to what your audience wants and needs, then you won’t be putting out content that draws them in and it will “miss the mark” with your audience.

Not engaging with your audience.

When we aren’t building relationships with our audience, then we typically aren’t engaging with them either.

We aren’t responding to comments. We aren’t trying to create conversations within comments. We aren’t utilizing social media tools such as Instagram stories or Facebook polls, to get our audience excited about our products and services.

On the Table…

In the digital age it’s more important than ever for us as business owners to build relationships with our audiences. Remember, it’s better to have 100 engaged and loyal followers who buy from you, than to have 10k fake and unengaged followers.
