Should Your Business Be on TikTok: 3 Things You May Want to Consider First

TikTok is one of the hottest social media platforms in the world right now! They have an impressive 800 million active users worldwide and have been downloaded 1.5 billion times!  Which begs the question, should your business be on TikTok: 3 things you may want to consider first are:

  • TikTok’s privacy concerns
  • The amount of video content creation you will need to do
  • Who is your audience?

Let’s break it down and look at each of these!

Privacy Concerns

TikTok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company that was founded in 2012.

By the end of 2019 there were concerns about how the Chinese government was using TikTok user’s data. Then, it was announced at the beginning of 2020 that the U.S. government had banned the use of TikTok for U.S. military personnel. Which led to more questions about TikToks safety.

There have also been concerns with minors (the majority of their user database) and sexual predators on the platform. Of course, this is a common problem on most social media platforms.

However, TikTok has made efforts to distance themselves from their Chinese ties and have been making strides to making the app more secure. In early April they announced they would be adding new parental controls to better protect minors using the app.

Lots of Content Creation

Another thing to keep in mind about using TikTok for your business is that you will have to to do a lot of video content creation.

Because TikTok’s content is short video clips, it means that you need to constantly be putting out content to get your audience’s attention…and keep them coming back for more!

The good news is that you can spend 30 mins-1 hour a week creating a video and then cut it down into smaller snippets for TikTok to help you streamline your content creation process.

Who is Your Audience?

While it’s true that TikTok is growing and more people of all ages and demographics are coming to the platform, 41% of the user base is still aged between 16-24 years old. Therefore, if your audience is say 40-50 years old, TikTok may not be the best platform for you to focus on.

On the Table…

There is no doubt that TikTok is an up and coming social platform that shouldn’t be ignored. However, there are still factors to consider before you take the plunge.
