Hello 2019

Welcome to another brand new year and Hello 2019! It is the first week of January as many groggily head back to their workstations. This time of year is often a reflective one as the joy of the holidays starts to shift to new year thoughts. Lately, New Years Resolutions are given a bad reputation namely that most people don’t stick to these new goals and folks should be working on bettering themselves everyday anyways. But let’s take a different perspective.

New Years Resolutions

It is true that the majority of people who set new years resolutions do not keep them, and this is true even as we say hello 2019. There are indeed a variety of statistics that show how many people have failed their resolutions by x amounts of days. However, let’s take a step back at look at why people set new years resolutions to begin with.

We all have habits we want to change, goals to achieve, and wishes to work towards. A new years resolution is a reflection on that. The coming of a new year provides the opportunity for reflection. How often do you take the time to look at where you are, where you have come from and thought about where you want to do?

The commonality of a new years resolution shows how many people are excited and encouraged to make a better life. What other social trends exist that are solely about continued self-improvement? It is really a positive thing when you look at it. Perhaps it gets such a bad rap because we don’t know how to set goals we can achieve.

Goal Setting

This section may be preaching to the choir, but chances are your goals stink. Your intentions are likely coming from a good place, but you are likely setting yourself up for failure before you even begin those New Year Resolutions.

Taking the classic example, “To lose weight” as a goal. You lose 1lb, yay you did the goal! But how does it feel? Now, how about “Lose 15lbs by March 31st to fit into my favorite spring dress by running the spring 5k comfortably.”  Is there any doubt how the goal will be achieved by when and through what end for why?

Set better goals for yourself. You deserve it.

The Power of Habit

“I built my habits and then my habits built me”

What is a habit? There are many many books and blogs and posts on this topic. A habit is the most successful way to achieve a goal. If you are in the habit of running twice a week, it will make it much more likely for you to be able to run that spring 5k, right?

The best parts about a habit are you don’t have to think about it, make a choice for it, or talk yourself into it. Think about going to work. You get up in the morning, get dressed, eat breakfast, and get ready for the day then head to work. In that time each day are you debating if you should go or not? Do you have to talk yourself into it? No. You just do it. That is the power of habit.

A tip for success, start small. Making a list of 20 new daily habits you want to achieve is difficult. Start with one small thing until you realize you are doing it without thinking any more. Such as 5 pushups as soon as you get out of bed.

On The Table

Hello 2019. Hello new year! So maybe New Years Resolutions aren’t the cool kid on the block anymore. But the intention behind them is what is important after all. Set some new goals for yourself and print yourself a recipe of habits to achieve that goal. You are worth it!
