More and more people are turning to video as the big element in Facebook marketing. Lately, there are even hints at a separate kind of TV from Facebook. With more videos come more video ads, and more data. How well did your video do? How many people watched it? What are video views on Facebook worth?

There are a few key metrics Facebook uses to report on the performance of Videos on a Facebook page. For page insights, there are two key metrics.

Minutes Viewed

In this example above, Facebook is reporting that 188 minutes of the video has been viewed. This means that parts of the video have been played on screens for a combined 188 minutes. For example, Person “A” may have watched the first 10 minutes, person “B” watch the last 5, and person “C” watched 7 minutes in the middle of the video for a total of 22 minutes viewed.

Video Views

In this example above, Facebook is reporting 451 video views. A video view is every time the video has been played on a screen for more than 3 seconds. This could be the same person more than once as well. It is a good idea to compare this to people reached, as well as 10+ second views and 100% views.

On the table…

Videos are a powerful marketing tool online and on Facebook. They are great at getting reach, but how can you tell how effective the view views on Facebook you are receiving are? Understanding the data! The more of a video is viewed, the better audience retention the video has. This is a fancy way of saying better data means you are reaching the right audience who likes the content.
