Why Blog?

Blogging has been around for a good amount of time now and has evolved with the internet. However, at its core, a blog retains the same basic purpose. If you have asked your self the question, “Why Blog?” this blog is a place to start to find answers.

A History Of Blogging

Why blog? Great question. What is a blog and where did it come from? Let’s start there. A blog started out as an online journal called a web log which was shortened into “blog.” As websites have developed, blogs have become great online marketing tools for businesses.

Why Blog

There are several reasons why a blog could help your business online. Here are just a few.

  • Give your company an online voice & tell your story
    • Showing the brand personality of a business is a challenge, especially online. A blog can give your business a voice online and set the tone for your brand.
  • Improve the websites findability & reach a larger audience
    • Search engines love new content, blogging helps with SEO and keeping your website active. Someone may be searching for a topic that would not necessarily pull up your website but could show your blog.
  • Develop as a business owner and writer
    • Blogging is all about writing about topics. For many blogs, you will have to do some research and learn more about various topics relevant to your business. Writing for your business will also make it easier for you to be able to talk more about your business and industry relevant topics.
  • Use as a creative tool to promote your products
    • A blog can be used as a selling tool both outright and creatively. Do you have a new product and you want to highlight all the features? A spotlight blog is a great way to do this. Are you a grocery store wanting to increase your produce sales? Start a healthy lifestyle blog including lots of free recipes that highlight your produce and the health benefits.

Just like every marketing strategy, whether or not blogging is right for you depends on your business.

Why Not Blog

Writing a blog is not the right thing for every business. Here are a few reasons you might not want to have a blog.

  • Your company doesn’t have a website and does not plan on getting one
  • You simply don’t want to take the time or pay someone to do it
  • The target market or current/potential audience does not read blogs or get online

As a business owner, this is just one of those decisions you will have to make.

On The Table…

There are many questions to ask yourself when you are deciding if blogging is right for your business. Why blog? To add a solid marketing strategy to your tool belt. Why not blog? If it doesn’t fit your audience or industry, or you really just don’t want to.
